Send only qualified technicians: skill classes and skills
Give each technician a skill class and skill tags, require them on the job, and the wrong person is never suggested first.

Two layers describe what a technician can do. Skill class is one per technician: General, HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Appliance, Carpentry or Landscaping. Skills are tags you write yourself, such as gas fitter, EPA 608 or backflow tester. Use skills for trade licences and tickets; the License # field on a profile is the driver's licence.
On the technician
Open People → Technicians & Managers, open the technician and set Skill class and Skills ("Pick from the library or type a new skill and press Enter"). Both can be filled from your spreadsheet when you import; see Import your existing customers and team.
On the job
In the job form, set Required skill class (Any, or one class) and Required skills. If you leave both empty, the service's category stands in.
What it changes
- The technician list on the job is filtered to the required skill class, and the ranking puts qualified people first.
- Assignment rules set to Technician must match the job's skill class skip everyone else. See Assignment rules.
- Dropping a job on an unqualified technician in the Scheduler or Map asks you to confirm, so the override is yours, not an accident.
